Design of Steering System Actuating Mechanism

Project introduction

Our task in this project was to design the mechanism actuating the existing steering system of a 45-meter passenger vessel. The catamaran-shaped hull already had two rudders, steering shafts, and steering tube sockets, so the challenge was to design the steering actuating mechanism that conforms to these specifications while also considering client requirements and regulatory standards, ensuring manufacturability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of the components.

Characteristics

  • Type: Passenger vessel
  • Operating zone: Inland water, zone 3

Main dimensions

  • Length: 44.9 m
  • Width: 8.5 m
  • Displacement: 163 tons
  • Passenger capacity: 350 persons

Construction design

Welded steel structure

Performed main tasks

  • On-site survey of existing structure
  • Development of the actuating mechanism concept tailored to available specifications and hydraulic parts
  • Structural sizing of mechanical components by manual calculations and finite element analysis
  • Construction plan
  • Designer supervision
